The Experience of War and Humanitarian Response

April 8, 2022

12 PM MT

When a major armed conflict takes place in our world, there are so many wounds left behind – visible and invisible. From those who are physically in the war zone, to the massive numbers of people displaced within and outside borders, to the many responders and volunteers offering aid and support, each individual is being impacted in unimaginable ways. In this conversation, we acknowledge the short and long-term physical and psychological harm that war causes. We acknowledge that also, amidst massive discord between states or nations, survivors of past wars and related conflicts may be profoundly destabilized and activated as well.  The world experiences turmoil, upheaval, and uncertainty on so many levels. Thus, our discussion this month with international humanitarian subject matter experts trained in neurobiological methods for trauma resolution and crisis stabilization will be sharing their experience, perspectives, and resources for those who may be affected.

This event is FREE and all are welcome!

Hidden Mental Health Professionals:
Educators and Teachers

Educators have been tasked with responsibilities that far exceed teaching in a classroom, not the least of which is identifying behavioral or mental health concerns and connecting students with the appropriate resources. What do you think of when you hear the word, "perspective?" We think of 2021 – and the new perspective we got from a(nother) year with COVID-19, new and more diverse faculty and board members, new initiatives and new staff, a new annual Conference, new outreach to those in crises, new countries starting SE training, and a new foundation for becoming more globally connected. We think of our new name and new identity to wrap all that, and more, inside. This past year, SEI focused on shifting our perspective to see the minutiae and the global perspective together. Your Body Broadcasts and Receives Messages

By Resmaa Menakem MSW, LICSW, SEP

6 minute read

“Your power of discernment emerges from your body’s ability to receive and amplify signals. Discernment tells you when another body’s signals are strong, clear, and consistent; when they are mixed or contradictory; when they are weak and easily subject to change; or when they are actually noise, distractions, lies, or dog whistles. It helps you decide whom to trust and whom not to, what to believe and what not to, and whether a particular body or situation is safe.

The post A First Seed for a New Professional Association appeared first on Somatic Experiencing® International.

]]>

Northern California was the first place SE trainings took place. In 1972, in his “tree house” on a hill in Berkeley, California, Peter Levine, PhD, offered the first training to a small group of clinicians. From the start, there was a realization that the impact of trauma in the world was staggering. As the training grew, the Northern California community’s assistants, organizers and SEPs were at the heart of that growth. In training after training, they realized the need for support for those who practice SE personally and professionally, a self-governing forum, and a place for SE students and SEPs to develop their vision for an SE community.

Ten years ago, a leader in the assistant community sent an email to about 20 others with a simple message: “We need a professional association.” That email sparked a decade-long engaged process of meetings, resources, agreements (and sometimes disagreements) to develop one. While there were many supportive community members, a core group of leaders continued working to build a community platform and to create opportunities for collaboration with SEI. Some of the events the NorCal Somatic Experiencing Professional Association (NorCal SEPA) group held over the years were local SE fireside chats and community gatherings, a 2017 Bay Area conference featuring Dr. Stephen Porges, support for local rapid disaster response, weekend retreats, and holiday potlucks at members’ homes.

Three years ago, the NorCal team met with Marv Tuttle, the then-interim executive director of SEI, and got SEI’s support for moving forward. “Finally, after 10 years of really hard work and perseverance we created a business plan for a 50l(c)(6) association,” says Maureen Harrington, SEP, a bodyworker in practice for more than 20 years in the Bay Area. “We have a good partner in SEI leadership and the team Marv has built.”

NorCal SEPA now has a place as the first chapter for what will be SEI’s next big step: Forming a professional association as a home for all SEPs, initially in the United States, under a 501(c)(6) legal structure that is exclusively designed to serve professional communities. In January, SEI and NorCal SEPA made it official, signing an affiliation agreement.

“The Northern California region is one of the largest and most diverse regions in the country,” says Harrington. “After years of important and challenging work we, as the temporary NorCal SEPA board, want it to be clear that we view this association as a seed for the wider NorCal community to nurture. Our mission statement is ‘to create a vibrant, diverse community and expand leadership capacity among all people trained in the Somatic Experiencing method of healing trauma.’ We are committed to centering diversity, equity, and inclusion as the chapter develops. We recognize we are currently an all-white board, which in many ways reflects past limitations in SE that are being worked on actively today. We are approaching this process with humility and are actively committed to recruiting a board that reflects the diversity of Northern California. We cover a lot of territory – 48 counties from the Bay Area up to the border with Oregon – and those of us in the Bay Area are working now to bring more of our northern counterparts in and learn about their needs so that our vision incorporates all. We’re very grateful for the support, guidance, and dedication of many community members and current SEI leadership to develop NorCal SEPA. We still have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we’re so proud to plant this seed for a bigger association. Many times, I didn’t think we’d make it this far.”

According to SEI Executive Director Marv Tuttle, NorCal SEPA will be the pilot local group for the professional association, which is part of the 2020-2022 SEI Strategic Plan. “They will be leading the way as the first chapter of the professional association we envision. Other regional groups have expressed an interest in being an early part of this effort, which we expect to be up and running by the end of 2022. We hope to collaborate with other like-minded groups throughout the world to create the possibilities for what a global professional association could do to spread its shared core values and unique body of knowledge. We don’t even have a name yet, but we do have a vision for what this new association can be.”

The affiliation agreement lays out the purpose for the professional association:

 • Unite SE professionals for the purpose of maintaining a professional association dedicated to promoting the highest professional standards of SE professionals for the optimal care of trauma patients.
 • Provide opportunities for continuous professional development, to include diversified educational activities.
 • Embody cultural responsiveness and humility by identifying and offering alliance to underserved and underrepresented portions of the SE community in an inclusive outreach program, including practitioners, students at all levels and the population served by local affiliates.
 • Support, evaluate, and disseminate scientific evidence to improve SE trauma practice.
 • Provide leadership in professional SE trauma practice to influence health care delivery locally, nationally, and internationally.
 • Collaborate in a culturally responsive manner with other professional associations, health care facilities, local community leaders and organizations, universities, industries, technical societies, research organizations, and governmental agencies.
 • Adopt policies and conduct programs for the improvement of the SE trauma practice.
 • Support identifying and changing the structural reasons for health disparities in oppressed populations and addressing structural impacts of bigotry in healthcare and trauma treatment.

“People on the ground, so to speak, at a local level, are those who can really broaden public awareness of Somatic Experiencing therapy, develop connections and partnerships with other like-minded groups, and build a community,” says Tuttle. “We also hope to engage in advocacy on behalf of this profession, something we’re limited in doing as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which is in its essence, a structure designed for the public benefit.”

The officers of NorCal SEPA are Harrington, President; Michael Changaris, PsyD, Secretary; Gwynne Gilson, SEP, LMFT, Board member at-large; and Andrea Gage, SEP, Treasurer.

During the next several months, SEI and NorCal SEPA will be meeting to help build the operations of this chapter and get a firm footing for the future. “We’re going to go step-by-step to build,” says Harrington. “We need to see what people in our area most want and need, whether they’re SEPs, assistants, or students. For example, the Trauma Outreach Program brought SE to survivors of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and we’re in an area that experiences natural disasters, so we believe there are others who have great interest in that work, which is becoming more critical. We’re going to be very intentional about bringing in their ideas on all of our proposed activities. We know we have people with passion for SE in these 48 counties in northern California – we just have to reach out and bring them in. I’m confident that won’t take another 10 years.”

A Letter from SEI Director of Training and Faculty Relations

Kristin Velazquez Kenefick, PsyD, P-SEP, TIYT

4-minute read

Kristin Velazquez Kenefick,

PsyD, P-SEP, TIYT

“From January 21-24, I had the pleasure of attending my first Faculty Forum since starting at SEI last year. A hybrid event, some of us were in-person together in California, while many others joined in on Zoom. I’m told it was our best attendance—by far!—to-date. With 41 members of the faculty, and several faculty mentees, we were able to dive deeply into important topics ranging from transgenerational trauma to neuroscience, and the rich conversations that resulted will lay the foundation for future changes at SEI and in the SE curriculum.”

INSIDE SEI

Meet SEI’s Newest Staff

Katelyn Johnson, Constituent Services Specialist

Katelyn Johnson

Katelyn Johnson is Texas born, grew up in Colorado and lives there still. Prior to joining SEI, Katelyn spent many years working for Starbucks, both as a shift supervisor and a barista. In her free time, she is usually hanging out at home with her cats, playing video games, going for drives through the mountains exploring all they have to offer, or playing Dungeons and Dragons.

"It's so rewarding to be a part of a team that strives to effectively communicate the importance of the SE modality to our constituents and I'm excited to dig in and be a part of the change that creates more ease of access to the program as well as more awareness and inspiration as SEI becomes a household name worldwide."

Emily Tworek

Development Manager

Emily Tworek

Emily is originally from the small town of Edinboro, Pennsylvania, but as of April 2021, she has made her home in New York City. She graduated from the University of Rochester in 2020 with a dual major in english and business, a minor in spanish, and a certificate in literary translation studies.

She discovered her love for business development while working at the Rochester-based literary nonprofit Writers & Books and at Pittsburgh CLO, a regional theater focused on producing musicals in Pittsburgh. She has a passion for telling stories about organizations and the people who make them exceptional, which she is excited to bring to SEI. Outside of work, she loves cooking and baking for her friends, reading, exploring museums and restaurants around Manhattan, seeing theatre, and attempting to learn the kalimba.

“SEI’s mission could not be more important in our world right now, and I’m honored to be a part of bringing it to fruition. I envision a development department that communicates the vitality of the SE modality to donors around the world, increases access to our programming and community, and inspires positive growth for the organization and for those we serve.”

Get to Know the SEI Constituent Services

Team

In a continued effort to provide outstanding constituent services to the SE community, SEI has recently organized a new team housed within the Operations Department: Constituent Services. This team is made up of two staff members, Katy Neisler, the Constituent Services Manager, and Katelyn Johnson, Constituent Services Specialist.

This new team's focus will be delivering outstanding communications through all of SEI's communication channels. Katy and Katelyn will be working behind the scenes to streamline technology processes to improve constituent services management and response times.

In the next few months, Constituent Services will be creating new ways to collect feedback, release knowledge resources on our website, and streamline our communication channels to help constituents get connected to the appropriate staff quickly.

Katy and Katelyn want to hear from you about your experiences with SEI! In the first quarter of 2022, they will be releasing several avenues for you to share your feedback, including this new quick survey. You can find this survey in all internal staff’s email signatures, and it will be added to the website soon!

SEI Responds to Marshall Fires in Boulder County, Colorado, USA

In response to the Marshall Fires on December 30 that devastated neighboring towns to SEI's administrative headquarters, SEI put out a call to SE students and SEPs to support survivors. The response was a staggering 211 volunteers, signed up and ready to make wellness check calls to 750 survivors. Calls are already underway and the volunteers are resourcing survivors with SE tools that can support them during this challenging time.

This response was made possible by SEI Director of Public Health Initiatives Amie Leigh in partnership with Crisis Cleanup, a national leader in collaborative disaster management, and the Mountain West VOAD, a coalition of Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster. Crisis response is a growing part of SEI’s public health efforts, as the need is greater than ever. Thank you to all the volunteers who are donating their time and SE expertise to support survivors!

Hidden Mental Health Professionals: Educators and Teachers

February 11, 2022 | 12:00 PM MT

Educators are tasked with the responsibility of teaching – children and adults – but time and circumstances have revealed that in many ways these professionals are responsible for much more. They have been tasked with guiding students and shaping their personalities, helping them endure through stress, and providing early identification of mental health issues. Often, teachers are the first people to identify certain behavioral and mental health concerns and connect students and families to additional school and community services, including mental health providers or social workers. Further, teachers are even sought out as the first source of support for students, acting as an unofficial counselor. In many ways, the current COVID-19 pandemic has compounded these issues, with many teachers reporting higher rates of burnout due to increased stress placed on them, as well as higher levels of student and family distress.

While teachers take on these responsibilities, some experts say that traditional training for educators does not adequately prepare them for these additional duties.

In this month's Community Conversation join Mina Roustayi, PhD, MSEd, SEP; Katie Jones, LMSW and Advanced SE Student; Danica Lynch, E-RYT, SEP; Patsy Ippolito, BEd, MA, SEP; and Colleen Enright, MA, NBCC, and Advanced SE Student as we explore this impact on teachers, considering ways mental health professionals can support educators, methods for peers to support each other, and access to tools to minimize and avoid burnout.

Welcome SEI's New Director of Communications

Sarah McAfee

Sarah McAfee

Sarah McAfee recently joined SEI as Director of Strategic Communications, a new position for SEI. Sarah is an experienced professional communicator with skills in strategic communications planning, innovative communication campaigns, storytelling, and thought leadership. She has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Arizona State University.

Most recently, she was director of communications for the Center for Health Progress, which is focused on eliminating barriers to healthcare. As director of strategic communications for SEI Sarah will provide leadership and direction for all communications and marketing strategies of SEI. Welcome Sarah!

“Growing up in Alaska taught me to appreciate nature, solitude, and adventure. After grad school I moved to Colorado, which has much of the same natural beauty and opportunity for exploration that I love, but fewer run-ins with bears while walking my dog. My career and heart are grounded in nonprofit leadership for health and health equity, and I believe deeply in the power of storytelling and communication to drive change for healing and justice. As mom to a kindergartener, my hobbies are largely LEGO-related for the time being, but I’m told that someday I’ll have time again for travel, art, baking, and reading books with actual chapters.”

The Biology of Trauma & How Somatic Experiencing Helps Holistic Life Navigation

with Dr. Abi Blakeslee, SEP

“Understanding that trauma is a biology, not a mindset, is what makes somatic therapy so unique and beautiful. Traditional talk therapies tend to focus on the events and identifying how we think and feel about them, but they don't ask us where we feel the events.

Trauma is not the event itself, it's the response to the event. I welcome Dr. Abi Blakeslee to my podcast to share her wisdom and insight around the biology of trauma and how that physical state of threat transforms into vitality through the practices of Somatic Experiencing.”

Colorado Fires

An Update from SEI Board Chair Rebecca Stahl, SEP

Rebecca Stahl, SEP
"For the second time this year, our Boulder home community has been struck by tragedy, this time with the worst fires they have ever seen. Everyone associated with the Somatic Experiencing International office is safe. The SEI staff and SE community are close and connected, and we are incredibly grateful to know our people are physically safe from harm. However, as a community, we know the impact trauma of this nature can have on folks, even those who do not lose their homes or are not asked to evacuate.

We ask that you send good wishes to the SEI staff and the SE community in the Denver and Boulder areas. Everyone in the Boulder office spends their days caring for all of us. May we be able to offer our hearts to them in return during this difficult time. Also, may the New Year bring more peace to the Boulder community."

How the Bottom-Up Treatment Can Address Trauma

By Amanda Ann Gregory, LCPC in Psychology Today

"Talk therapy doesn’t always work in treating trauma. Why? It’s a top-down treatment approach that typically targets the top step of your brain in order to access your lower steps. Talk therapy is like walking down your brain’s staircase. What if you walked up that staircase instead?"

The Neurobiological Mechanics of Motivation

January 14, 2022

12 PM MST

When life gets challenging, motivation to get up and go can come to a heavy halt. We may make New Year's resolutions in attempt to force a change. Yet, virtually every study tells us that approximately 80% of New Year's resolutions will be abandoned by February. Advances in neurobiological studies identify motivation is not just psychological, but rather, is rooted in engaging the energy of a well-regulated nervous system.

In this month’s community conversation, we will explore what drives motivation, what happens to nervous system responses when it wanes, and ways to support others and yourself to stay energized and resourced for the outcomes you aim to achieve. This event is free to attend.

What to Do About Pandemic PTSD

By Susan Kreimer

“When the COVID-19 pandemic engulfed the nation well over a year ago, Rebecca Hendrickson, MD, PhD, immersed herself in the shell-shocking revelations that clinicians began posting on social media. The accounts offered just a snapshot of the pandemic's heavy psychological toll, and Hendrickson, a psychiatrist at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle and an expert in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), wanted to know more.”

Upcoming Community Conversation

The Neurobiological Mechanics of Motivation

The Neurobiology of Chronic Pain and Advanced Approaches to Resolution and Relief

It is estimated that chronic pain affects one in five people, or nearly 1.5 billion globally. Chronic pain is a complex symptom that can stem from a variety of physical and mental conditions. In this SE Community Conversation, we will hear from several experts in the field who specialize in working with chronic pain and utilize somatic techniques to support resolution. These experts will discuss the effects of chronic pain on the nervous system, resources for chronic pain management, and things providers should know when working with clients experiencing chronic pain.

Letter From the SEI Board Chair

Rebecca Stahl, SEP

Rebecca Stahl, SEP

On November 7-8, 2021, SEI held its first in-person 2-day experiential training for P-SEPs to be able to complete their Advanced level and qualify for their SEP certificate. The training was held in Golden, Colorado, was taught by Dave Berger, SEP, MFT, and marked a positive step forward for the SEI training program as it was the first in-person training since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to focus on healing with touch.

In this month's Letter from the SEI Board Chair, Rebecca Stahl weighs in on the significance of this step and what it means for the SE community as a whole.

"The pandemic is not over. We have no idea how long it will continue. We have no idea what the end of the pandemic will even look like, and what the world will be when it is finally over. What I think we are all coming to accept is that our lives will never be the same as they were before, again. I am sure we all can think of ways we can improve our lives from the lessons we learned from COVID, and I am sure there are aspects of our prior lives we will continue to grieve. My expectation is that, never again, will any of us, particularly in this community, take for granted the power of in-person connection and the felt sense of an in-person training."

Heartbeat of the Heartland - Taking the Pulse of Rural Mental Health

Rural communities across North America and around the world are home to some of the strongest, most resilient people. Cultural roots, social expectations, and shared mindsets create distinct rural identities. There can be unique challenges when it comes to mental health in rural communities both in terms of access and interest, as mental health stigmas can run high in remote communities favoring self-reliance. In this special session we have assembled practitioners who live and work in these communities to share their experience.

“I'm from a small town in Upstate New York called Cortland (famous for their apple namesakes and for their fly-fishing reels) and am currently living in Rochester. I have a one-year-old daughter named Mabel and a very smart wife, Rachel, who is in the technical writing field. I have a Master's in English and love to read - mostly science fiction, fantasy, and contemporary literature these days but I sometimes page through a non-fiction book. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, an avid player of retro video games, enjoy watching baseball (go Yankees!), and have a proclivity for hiking when I'm not relaxing. I’m always happy to learn, talk, and listen. Feel free to reach out, my door is both digitally and physically open.”

Abigail Hofweber, Marketing & Membership Assistant
As the Marketing & Membership Assistant, Abigail will work to cultivate passion, creativity and excellence. These values nurture the ability to provide a positive and supportive experience for our students, members, practitioners and SE community. The foundation for this success will be built upon community, communication, and interconnectedness.

After spending 4 years traveling the world, teaching art, nannying and farming, I moved to Boulder, Colorado to study art therapy at Naropa University. As I begin the process of grad school, I am very excited to be a part of the SE community and team."

A Monozygotic Twin Study Assessing the Efficacy of Somatic Experiencing and Attachment Focused-Somatic Experiencing

By Joseph P. Riordan, SEP, CCLP, MAPS

“Monozygotic twins offer a unique opportunity to examine the contagious nature of trauma in attachment dyads when one twin experiences trauma, but the other does not. Dyadic trauma is suboptimal and antagonistic to the dynamics of secure phylogenetic attachment (SPA). Attachment perturbations due to trauma may be complicit in widespread psychopathology, loneliness, social isolation, and loss of social cohesion. Somatic experiencing (SE) is an effective treatment for PTSD and attachment focused-somatic experiencing (AF-SE) resolves dyadic trauma.”
