Dear Global SE Community,<\/p>\n

It has been some time since I have written one of these letters, and <\/span>it feels fitting to be writing <\/span>this at a time of seasonal transition. Here in the northern hemisphere, spring is coming, and <\/span>there is so <\/span>much shifting at SEI. First, <\/span>I have resigned from the Somatic Experiencing <\/span>International (SEI) board of directors and <\/span>have been appointed <\/span>the <\/span>I<\/span>nterim <\/span>E<\/span>xecutive <\/span>D<\/span>irector. <\/span>I <\/span>am deeply grateful to have this opportunity, as SE and SEI are dear to my heart. <\/span>Lik<\/span>e so many of <\/span>you, this community has changed literally everything in my life, and the opportunity to serve in <\/span>this new capacity is an unparalleled honor. <\/span><\/p>\n

I want to <\/span>begin by saying <\/span>thank you to Marv<\/span>, SEI\u2019s <\/span>unwavering leader and <\/span>executive director for <\/span>the <\/span>past four years<\/span>. <\/span>I<\/span>n December, as you may have seen, <\/span>Marv <\/span>went on medical leave. <\/span>He <\/span>brought a level of stability to SEI that had never been felt before. He helped us learn to engage <\/span>the broader community in decisions and helped us to set up committees that <\/span>have led to more <\/span>community involvement. Marv brings heart and care and a deep sense of listening to every <\/span>moment of <\/span>every <\/span>day. And while <\/span>he <\/span>is no longer in the executive director role, he is still with us <\/span>in a consulting capacity. <\/span>I take great comfort in <\/span>k<\/span>nowing that Marv is still here with us all <\/span>for this <\/span>transition<\/span>, <\/span>and <\/span>I hope <\/span>that <\/span>will bring you some peace of mind as well. Please join me in thanking <\/span>him for his deep presence and wisdom and his willingness to remain in his consulting role.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>SEI will <\/span>stil<\/span>l <\/span>be conducting a national search for a permanent executive director this year, as has <\/span>always been the plan, with an expected start date of January 2024.<\/span>I know the board looks <\/span>forward to sharing more details about that process and timeline in the coming m<\/span>onths.<\/span><\/p>\n

Second, I want to acknowledge the Somatic Experiencing Ukraine Task Force (SEUTF) and its <\/span>metamorphosis to the Somatic Experiencing Humanitarian Committee. The SEUTF was born <\/span>from the escalation of the war in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, just more <\/span>than a year ago. For <\/span>the first time, SEI and the European Association of Somatic Experiencing (EASE) came together <\/span>in a joint effort to support humanitarian response to the war. The first two co<\/span>-<\/span>chairs, Zlata <\/span>Ko\u0161tejnov\u00e1<\/span>(EASE) and Defne Erdur (SEI) create<\/span>d the space for volunteers from around the <\/span>world to support SEPs who were offering support to refugees <\/span>\u2013 <\/span>a <\/span>\u201c<\/span>help the helper<\/span>\u201d<\/span>model. In <\/span>addition, Claudia Villagra and Liana <\/span>Dugaro started hosting weekly Resilience Connection <\/span>sessions, an opportunity for SEP<\/span>s and others to come together through social engagement and <\/span>SE practice.<\/span>Liana worked with volunteers around the world on translation projects and <\/span>translated SCOPE, among other resources, into more than 30 languages.<\/span>SEI hired Melissa <\/span>Sinclair who supporte<\/span>d all these efforts and <\/span>built the infrastructure and program administration <\/span>necessary for this effort to thrive<\/span>. Together, the group of volunteers amassed <\/span>a bank of <\/span>resources that are available on <\/span>the SEUTF website<\/a><\/span>. <\/span>In total, we engaged <\/span>more than 400 <\/span>volunteers from <\/span>more than 40 <\/span>countries in this effort<\/span>. We <\/span>translated <\/span>104 resources <\/span>into <\/span>29 <\/span>languages, and had <\/span>more than 1600 webinar participants from 54 countries, with the most <\/span>recent webinar interpreted into 11 languages simultaneously. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In November, we were joined by a Rotary Fellow, Isadora Darwich, who helped to set up a <\/span>conference commemorating the SEUTF\u2019s <\/span>work for the past year. Many people shared their <\/span>stories, their learnings, and their connection at the day<\/span>-<\/span>long conference<\/span>, during which <\/span>we <\/span>announced the new iteration of the task force. It will become the SE Humanitarian Committee<\/span>, <\/span>jointly chaired by SEI <\/span>and EASE, a continued collaboration<\/span>. We know, unfortunately, that the <\/span>need for humanitarian response will not go away. Instead, we are going to continue to meet <\/span>the need as best we can through a help<\/span>-<\/span>the<\/span>-<\/span>helper model and other resources. The new <\/span>committee <\/span>has already been tested in response to the devastating earthquake in Turkey and <\/span>Syria where our Turkish SEPs banded together quickly to offer support and care for the SEPs <\/span>offering on<\/span>-<\/span>the<\/span>-<\/span>ground support to those most impacted by the earthquake. It has bee<\/span>n an <\/span>honor to be a part of the <\/span>t<\/span>ask <\/span>f<\/span>orce, and I look forward to seeing where the committee is <\/span>headed. Please keep a watch for more information about the committee and ways you can <\/span>support moving forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

As you know, there have been some difficult times <\/span>these past few months at SEI <\/span>and in the <\/span>world<\/span>, but as spring comes to the northern hemisphere, I feel a shift. Like always, we are <\/span>coming together as a community. <\/span>W<\/span>hat I <\/span>continue to <\/span>hear most often from people is how great <\/span>SE is and how great the SE commun<\/span>ity is for them. <\/span>I have had the distinct honor and privilege of <\/span>spending the past 4.5 years getting to know people within this community from all <\/span>around <\/span>the <\/span>world, and what I can say unequivocally is how heartfelt and passionate our community is and <\/span>how de<\/span>eply <\/span>we all <\/span>believe in the <\/span>human potential for healing and resilience<\/span>. As we know from <\/span>SE, contraction and expansion go together, and as we have contracted a bit, we have found our <\/span>footing, and we have found our center<\/span>, <\/span>and <\/span>we have found <\/span>our structural con<\/span>nection. We <\/span>can <\/span>slowly move back into expansion, into holding the container for the larger community, and into <\/span>continuing to offer trainings, support, and connection. <\/span>I am deeply humbled and honored to have been asked to serve in this new role. As I refl<\/span>ect on <\/span>what it is, I keep coming back to the same north star<\/span>\u2013 <\/span>the only way to be in this role is by <\/span>connecting to all of you and reminding myself what Marv taught us all so well, how to be <\/span>servant leaders. The new humanitarian committee is the perfect rem<\/span>inder that there <\/span>will <\/span>always be a need for SE in the world, and we are only going to be able to continue showing up <\/span>when we do it together.
